BUT WE'VE DISCOVERED A FAR MORE IMPORTANT USE: FLYRODS.
Winston introduced its first generation fly rods with Boron in 1998. Now with our new Boron IIIx rods utilizing our proprietary Boron III technology, Winston continues its position as the leading fly rod company in designing extraordinary lightweight and quick, responsive high performance fly rods utilizing this amazing material.

Boron is five times as strong and twice as stiff as steel, yet lighter than aluminum; it lets us add stability and up to 25% more strength to graphite enabling us to significantly reducing weight over comparable graphite rod models. Boron III technology includes our NEW third generation boron/graphite composite material combined with NEW refined power transfer tapers. Boron III material has more boron in the boron/graphite composite than in the Boron II composite, giving the material an even higher compressive strength and flexural modulus. Therefore, using Boron III material in the butt section of these rods makes them even more powerful than Boron II butt sections without adding weight. These more powerful butt sections are combined with finely tuned power transfer tapers to smoothly transmit this increase in power through the rod sections to the line, providing the caster with an even broader casting range, better line control, greater casting accuracy, and the ability to pick up even more line off the water, while still preserving the feel, the light presentation, and the tippet protection found in our famous Boron IIx rods.

Winston's utilization of Boron II and Boron III materials and designs has enabled us to achieve unprecedented levels of performance. Our Boron II-MX, Boron IIx, and Boron IIt rod series as well as our Boron II Two-Handed fly rod series rods have been regarded as the most innovative, most responsive and extraordinarily powerful fly rods in the world. Our new technologically advanced Boron IIIx rods continue to preserve Winston's unique tradition of providing the most fishable fly rods available. In the same way that parabolic skis transformed the ski industry, Boron has revolutionized Winston fly rod design.
Here is an overview of how Boron II and Boron III technology is utilized for each of our performance rod series:
New Boron IIIx rods arguably the finest fly rods ever made. Utilizing higher modulus third generation Boron/Graphite composite, Boron IIIx rods offer unprecedented performance. They have an even broader casting range that lets anglers control line speed for long casts directly into the wind or gentle presentations up close. They feature a stronger butt section for lifting more line off the water. They are highly responsive and very powerful, yet lightweight with great feel and liveliness. In the words of our technical advisor Joan Wulff, "Boron IIIx rods are an amazing combination of speed, power and Winston smoothness."
Our Boron IIt Series offers an innovative design blending technology with tradition. The result is a smooth-casting yet highly responsive medium action rod that is perfect for dry fly fishing or light nymphing. We only make these Boron IIt rods in lighter, trout models (3-weight through 5-weight). They are incredibly smooth and provide a fresh, more modern/high-tech updating of our famed "Winston Action." The Boron in these rods, however, also gives these rods a controlled power and liveliness unlike any graphite rods made.
Our Boron II-MX Series rods are significantly faster action rods are definitely the stiffest and most powerful rods we make. The strength and weight advantages of Boron II are so significant, they are arguably the best balanced and lightweight powerful fly rods ever made. You will definitely feel the power when you cast these rods. The stronger mid and butt sections in particular allow you to carry more line in the air, lift more line off the water, and cast longer distances even in heavy winds. Designed for those who prefer a faster action with more muscle, the Boron II-MX offers tremendous power and control for both saltwater and freshwater applications (offered 4-weight through 12-weight).
