I DON’T WANT TO SAY IT’S HARD FOR A NEW FLY ROD TO IMPRESS ME THESE DAYS, BUT TO SOME DEGREE….IT REALLY KIND OF IS.
Does that mean I’m still not excited to cast a flashy new stick of graphite and don’t think that many of them really are pretty awesome. Not at all. With all the various technologies that go into fly rods these days- even with the mid priced offerings- we as anglers have it pretty much made in the shade when it comes to finding a fly rod that suits our needs and wallet.

As a child, I grew up playing in the rivers and hills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. My parents gave us limited rules and restrictions when we hit the trails and rivers. We could run free, climb on the rocks, explore what we thought where endless boundaries, as long as Mom could see us. There was a sense of magic, playing in the pale blue waters and lush forest.

The R.L. Winston Rod Company is very pleased to announce that Mia Sheppard has joined the Winston Field Advisor team. Two time world champion spey caster, accomplished guide, conservationist, upland bird hunter, skier and mother, Mia grew up in Tennessee, chasing trout and hiking the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains. Fly fishing caught her attention in 1996 and in 2001, Marty Sheppard, her husband, introduced her to spey casting, and connecting with steelhead. Together they purchased Little Creek Outfitters, guiding anglers into steelhead, trout and smallmouth bass on Oregon Rivers.

Jim has been a product and business developer in the fly market for over 25 years. He founded three brands: Redington, Albright and Douglas. He also served as President of Hardy North America. He brings an experienced perspective of the market and its future direction to his duties at Winston. Jim will be working on the sales programs in the export and southeastern US markets. As a member of the Winston team Jim will also be working on special business development projects. He lives in Stuart, Florida with his wife, Tess and enjoys his four boys’ adventures as anglers and adults.
