Just picked up my new Pure 8′ 4-weight. I have an 8′ 4-weight BIIIx and an 8.5′ 4-weight Air as well as old IM6 from way back when. Comparing the three newer rods I noticed the handle on the Pure is about half an inch shorter than the BIIIx and Air rods in the same weight. I’m loving the feel of the Pure and was just wondering what the thought process was with the shorter grip. I don’t have overly big hands and the rod casts like a dream so not concerned, just curious. Thanks for any feedback. By the way, you hit this one out of the park so Kudos go to everyone from design, production, finishing and final check. Great job!
Thanks for the note and kind words Timothy! Yes – the grip was designed shorter on the Pure. A couple things – the shorter grip keeps one’s hand lower on the rod, which provide more feel, and a more progressive action. While it’s only shorter by an inch, it’s really amazing how much that contributes to the delicate design of the Pure series. A longer grip puts the hand higher on the rod blank and in turn, the rod action gives faster feedback to the angler.
