Here in Pennsylvania, the name of the game is versatility. Our technical spring creeks and brawling freestones present a number of challenges and opportunities that can happen at any point in the day – dry flies on 17′ 7x leaders, tightline nymphing, swinging streamers, indicator nymphing, you name it. It’s nice to be able to take just one rod to the water, and the Air 2 10′ 4wt is an excellent choice to cover my bases during a day out! Super light in hand, an incredibly smooth taper, delicate as can be in close yet with enough power to cast 70′ or more, I’d recommend it to anyone!
I take this rod everywhere. When drifting it will handle long casts with heavy nymph rigs or small streamers. It mends beautifully. The rod can cover a ton of water while wading and if theres brush behind, no worries. She is a roll or single hand spey casting monster.
Loading the rod under 20 feet is tougher, so I use a Rio single hand 6 weight spey line.
Perfect for covering a long stretch of river. Great at roll casting or single hand speys when there’s no room behind and can cover longer casts easily when overhead casting. Lined with a 6 weight single hand spey line the rod cast short, long and single hand spey casts easily. This is really ‘do it all 10 footer’ wjether you’re on foot or drifting.
The 6-weight Reach is incredible for single-hand spey casting. Light – lighter than anticipated for a 10-foot 6-weight, it allows for long casting sessions, overhead or using spey casts. I use the Rio Integrated TrouptSpey (3 wt) – and they are a terrific combination for beach fishing on Puget Sound.
The first day I had this rod I walked down to the Yellowstone took some line out and my first cast was unbelievable, I felt the extra line coming threw my hand so fast it wanted to rip more line out of the reel. I swear the fly landed 20 yards further than I expected, who needs to double haul ? This is my second Winston Rod, once you have one, you will be spoiled, and never buy any other Rod. I’m excited to buy my next Winston, “Spey Rod”
