  1. 9′ 7WT

I was extremely excited to get my hands on the new 9′ 7wt Winston BIII Plus for my annual visit to Andros South Lodge on South Andros Island in the Bahamas. We made our way down to the island, with a late night in Nassau (which is a story for another time), and prepared for our first day on the flats. I paired the 7wt rod with a Hatch 7 Plus Large Arbor (Clear/Green to match the rod, of course) and a Scientific Anglers Sharkwave Saltwater WF7F. My biggest concern was that often times the wind blows on South Andros Island and can sometimes blow really hard. Would the a 7wt be able to handle it?

Throughout the week we fished in a myriad of conditions, from dead calm zero wind days to seriously windy days. Fortunately, I never had to test the rod in hurricane conditions. On the calm days, the 7wt was able to quietly present the fly to spooky fish in the shallows. And on the windy days, it was able to punch casts through to the target. The rod was accurate and able to turn over my bonefish flies, even the bigger lead-eyed mantis shrimp patterns.

Once a fish was on the line, this rod was able to play the fish well and it was able to protect the tippet. When fish made runs towards the mangroves, I was able to put the brakes on and turn them back towards open water. While I didn’t catch any of the island’s famous big fish on this trip, I was able to catch fish up to 6-7 lbs and I am sure this rod could handle much larger fish.

I can confidently recommend this impressive Winston rod and can’t imagine ever traveling to visit the South Andros “Land of Giants” without it in the future. I can’t wait to put the 9wt to the test.

  2. 8WT & 9WT Jungle Rods

Setup: 8wt and 9wt loaded with 8wt/9wt Scientific Angler intermediate lines, sinking tips and Cortland floating line.

Water fished: Orinoco river basin, Colombia South America, hot-humid tropical weather. Species targeted: Peacock Bass, Payara, Arawanas, jungle exotic species.

Most impressive about the rod: Excellent line feel, extremely fast, sensible tip yet powerful rod. It carries lots of heavy line and big flies in the air without sacrificing line feel and distance, powerful butt for big fish, light yet powerful.

    Defining Features: Strong, Fast, Accurate

Best applications and Situations: Heavy flies and sinking lines, powerful butt for big fish, good rod for extensive shoreline casting.

  3. 9′ 9WT Jungle Rods

“Honestly, just about perfection. My two 9′ 9wts were on the water 10 hours a day for 30 days, and they were fished HARD. My short review is this: This rod is deadly accurate, casts like a 9 weight, but fights fish like a 10. EXACTLY what I need for our peacock bass. Our early season means we’re throwing a 300 grain line, 30 and 50 pound mono, and 3/0 flies in a tight loop in an effort to hit very small openings in the flooded tree line. The biggest fish are often 10 feet back in the trees, and only the perfect cast can get that system delivered. Simply put, the Winston Jungle 9′ 9WT delivers in a very technical and demanding environment.

Our waters drop 1 foot a day, so by the end of our season we are sight-casting to cruising peacocks in very shallow water. Again, accuracy is a must, but it’s far more than that. Our fish do not spook by a fly hitting the water, but they absolutely spook by fly line hitting the water. It is a very foreign sound in a very wild environment. In order to be successful this time of year, my clients need a rod that throws a heavy system accurately and QUIETLY. Impossible? Pretty much, but again the Jungle rod delivers. ”

“Lucky me, when I called Winston to ask if they had any loaners in stock for an upcoming trip to Cuba, they offered to let me fish both an 8 and 10 weight in their new Boron lll Plus saltwater series. You betcha I said.

Ultimately, I have to say that I was extremely impressed. Both the 8 and 10 weight rods were physically light, but more importantly continued to feel light even when pushing them at great distance. Furthermore, the rods cast very easily, but created tremendous line speed. This shows how balanced the Boron III Plus rods are, and how much attention the team at Winston has put in to their design. One day on a Bonefish flat I had exhausted myself on several dozen fish, and convinced my guide to let me pole our small skiff while he fished the 8 weight. I knew he was a great caster, and he immediately made a cast all the way to the end of the fly line to hook a fish that only he had seen. He looked back at me and said ‘I have never cast a rod that could do that so easily.’

Besides Bonefish, I was lucky enough to land two Permit, and many Tarpon on the 10 weight. This rod cast everything from a floating line with a heavy shrimp pattern, to a 375 grain sink tip with a large Tarpon fly. This was easily the best 10 weight rod I have ever fished, making casting easy, accurate, and fun. Too many 10 weights are a chore to cast, and the Boron III Plus was anything but that.

Congratulations to Winston on doing the hard work in order to make a truly great product. I highly recommend the Boron III Plus series to saltwater anglers the world over.”

  5. 9′ 5wt, 9′ 6wt

“After a solid week of testing the Boron III Plus 5- and 6-weight rods on the brook trout and Ouananiche salmon of Labrador, I can honestly say they are amazing. They are by no means too much for trout fishing and in fact perfect for destinations with large trout, extra wind where fishing larger flies is required. During the week I managed to fool several more landlocked salmon and many of the largest brook trout of my life. I’ve also put these wonderful rods to work for mirror carp fishing here in Idaho and they are THE rod for the freshwater flats!”

  6. 9′ 9wt Jungle Rods

“On a recent trip fishing for golden dorado in Tsimane in Bolivia, I had the opportunity to test drive the new Boron III Plus 9′ 9-weight jungle rod and was very impressed. Many rods today are fine casting tools, or fight fish well, but very few do both. Most fish are caught within 50 feet, so having a rod that is powerful is important for wind and big flies, but it must also the ability to deliver a fly in-close with finesse.

The golden dorado is the gangster of the jungle rivers. These fish are explosive, look mean, and jump. Once a dorado is hooked the real work or fun begins. They pull hard, jump, and ultimately run for cover. The Winston Boron III Plus Jungle Rods are perfectly designed for this fishery. If you cannot stop (and I mean STOP) a 25 pound dorado with 40 pound test before it swims into an intricate log jam you will lose half your fish. Maximum pressure, serious leverage by incorporating the “down and dirty” fish fighting technique, and staying close to the fish are all vital to success. Again, the rod you fish also needs to shoot line quickly. Since you are also blind casting all day, minimal false casting is key to making it through the day without tiring. The oversized guides on the Jungle rod enable aggressively tapered lines to shoot further with minimal false casts. The new Boron III Plus Jungle rod is a no brainer for anyone fishing for dorado, pacu, peacock bass, backcountry tarpon, snook, pike, muskies, large and small mouth bass, tigerfish, GT’s, and any other species where you are throwing large flies for big fish.”
